Recap: 9/30 – 10/28 Recovery and Progress Update
As I reflect on the journey from September 30th to October 28th, I’m struck by how much this period has been a mix of growth, challenges, and notable milestones in my recovery process following my hip replacement and subsequent infection treatment.
Physical Recovery and Mobility Gains
Throughout these four weeks, I experienced gradual physical improvement, marked by increased strength and mobility. I started incorporating more activities, including working part-time at my business, Cell Repair 4 Less, for 10-15 hours per week. This period saw me transition from more consistent use of assistive devices like crutches and canes to tentative, independent walking for short distances. Every small step without support felt like a significant victory, representing the hours of physical therapy and persistent effort.

Milestones and Activities
I pushed my boundaries by getting back on my motorcycle and, later, my electric-assisted bicycle, marking a return to activities that bring me joy. The motorcycle rides, including a 100-mile journey with my friend Charles and a 205-mile ride with Jen, were exhilarating but also served as a reality check on my limitations. My body responded with mixed signals: endurance in some moments, tension and soreness in others.

Challenges Along the Way
Despite this progress, my journey was not without setbacks. I faced consistent neck and upper back tension, which often resurfaced after extended activities or periods of work. These physical challenges reminded me of the importance of balancing my eagerness to return to normal life with the necessity of listening to my body’s signals.
Midway through the month, I also introduced sunbathing, gentle yoga, and time in my hammock as grounding practices to foster healing. Some days, these rituals felt therapeutic and centering; on others, pain and fatigue limited my participation.

Doctor Visits and Adjustments
Throughout this time, I continued regular appointments with my physical therapist, focusing on tailored exercises to strengthen my leg and regain mobility. I also had check-ins with my infectious disease team to monitor recovery. Positive feedback from these visits kept me motivated, even as occasional setbacks reminded me to be patient.
Revelations and Reflections
This month was a lesson in acceptance and surrender. I learned that progress isn’t linear and that healing is often a dance between forward movement and moments of pause. Whether I was making breakthroughs in mobility, experimenting with desk ergonomics for better posture, or navigating through pain that resurfaced unexpectedly, each experience deepened my understanding of resilience and self-care.
